Yechh:

Possibly the most annoying and rude commercial I’ve seen in a while; it doesn’t sink in as to what’s going on until the end.  Aaaaargh.  (NSFW, really mostly crass as heck, and it sure helps if you know the slang reference to the anatomy.)

Opinion inertia:

Going back to my response posts,  I want to stress that I never assume that anyone voting against Obama is a racist, or that Republicans are racists, or that either on the Republican ticket is a racist.  I know better.
I’ve lived with serious racists, had racism and sexism used against me and mine (you do [...]

There hadda be a law:

The Anchorage Daily News reports this morning that the State Legislature had to step in and pass a law because of Sarah Palin and her hand-picked Wasilla police chief’s treatment of rape victims, forbidding police departments from charging rape victims for medical exams post-rape. Nowhere else in Alaska was this done but Palin’s Wasilla.  Details [...]

The Derby:

Published by jrittenhouse under meredith, parenting, women

Mere and I were invited out to the Roller Derby recently by Jonathan Blaque (along with dinner beforehand) and - well, it was my first time to go into the city for a LONG LONG time, with a surety that my foot wouldn’t be too messed over by any significant walking. I’ve heard stuff [...]

Problem for Obama #1:

Matt Stoller at Open Left:
Women, in particular boomer women, are really really mad.  …Women of working age who grew up on choice and first wave feminism and strong glass ceilings and saw, up close, sexual harrassment and the Clarence Thomas hearings in 1991, don’t like a new form of politics that comes complete with a [...]

Electioneering:

George McGovern: I’m switching to Obama, and Hillary should drop out.
Chris Matthews: My NBC bosses were for the war and then for Hillary, and I got pressured…
The Nation: Is there gender solidarity for Hillary Clinton, regardless of what she does or how she behaves?
McCain: We have to support Czechoslovakia. This, of course, would require such [...]

WWHS and the Radical in Retrospect:

My great hero in freshman year at my high school was Tim Langley; a great actor, well-spoken, intelligent, kind, a fighter for the underdog, and just in general an admirable guy. He was well-chosen in my freshman (and his senior) year to play Cyrano De Bergerac…and he was also the news editor on the [...]

1957: The Year That Changed America

Of course, it was the year I was born and they put out the ‘57 Chevy, so that should be a start….from US NEWS AND WORLD REPORT, and really worth a serious look-through.

The collaborative’s biggest success, the Pan Asian Volunteer Health Clinic, operates every Tuesday evening in a county building in Silver Spring. Virtually every person who signs in is Chinese born or raised, as are the volunteer doctors and assistants. Their shared backgrounds mean easier communication when patients describe symptoms or the herbal remedies they have [...]
