No, sorry:

For all of the folks in Facebook who invite me to participate in a game: Sorry, don’t have the time to play them, and I distrust a lot of the join-this stuff in Facebook anyway. For all the folks anywhere who invite me to events out of town (Chicago): Sorry, too laid up after the [...]

ESPN, Thursday night:

University of Dayton basketball playing for the NIT championship, 7 pm.  Be there.  Aloha!

Out:

14 February, 2010 (23:46) | adoption, automobiles, china, dayton, ohio, personal, travel, weather | By: jrittenhouse

Going off to the Dayton trip tomorrow (Monday) morning, coming back by dinnertime Thursday.  Apparently, there’s going to be a ton of snow (6-8 inches) hit Dayton tomorrow, and I’m really not thrilled about having to do a long drive through snow…will check this carefully in the morning.  Expect some reports on the road from [...]

The Honors Institute:

I’ve been asked to speak at a Wright State University forum; their Honors Institute is having a symposium on Chinese-American relations called “Connecting With China”,  and I’m to talk on “Exploring Issues in Cross-Cultural Adoptions” from 2-4 pm, February 17th. The event is free to the public, but you have to register in advance to [...]

And one more story…

19 December, 2009 (23:02) | adoption, dayton, family, jackie, joe, meredith, orphans, parenting, rittenhousia, susan, twins | By: jrittenhouse

…from the Dayton Daily News (my hometown paper) about the twins.  This was a surprise, really, and will beyond any doubt be the end of the stories. Part of it is that it’s all been said – there’s not a lot more to add.

Rare loves:

Dayton Daily News article; the reporter’s adopted child from China was first raised by a foster family in China, who the child hadn’t forgotten -and who hadn’t forgotten her.  Great story about how the foster family and the adoptive family got in contact… Considering the whole thing with the twins and sisterfar, this hits home [...]

Favorite Pizza in the universe:

21 October, 2009 (13:44) | dayton, food, ohio, personal | By: jrittenhouse

Marion’s Piazza in the Dayton, Ohio area, hands down.  Mushroom, sausage, pepperoni and (if I’m eating by myself) anchovies.   Yes, I like anchovies on pizza, so long as they don’t have bones.

That chicken just followed him home:

Stupid thief of the day: Dayton, Ohio cops catch man outside barbeque joint, reeking of grease while the burglar alarm was going off (yes, I know the newspaper’s writers say wreaking; I can’t help the fall of journalistic standards) – he claimed he was dumpster diving for leftovers, but the cops found that he’d broken [...]

Sheesh…

9 July, 2009 (18:42) | I'm-not-making-this-up-you-know, dayton, deaths, weird | By: jrittenhouse

Growing up as a boy in Dayton,  I got familiar with the Great Miami River, which rolls wide and broad through the city – and never gets more than 25 feet deep. Apparently a guy was out fishing the other day with a pal, and decided out of the blue that he was going to [...]

Goes without saying:

30 June, 2009 (16:27) | I'm-not-making-this-up-you-know, celebrities, celebrity, chicago, dayton, deaths, delusions, education, hacks, idiots, illinois, news, ohio, peeve, peeves, sep_reality, sex, south-carolina, wretched-excess | By: jrittenhouse

I am singularly uninterested in the Jackson story.  I’ve seen enough oddball celebrity circuses, and the really interesting and truly weird stuff will not come out for a while for most people.   I expect more news circuses repeated endlessly on the news, and I will ignore them all. Finally, someone sems to be doing something [...]

Analog TV: *poof*

28 June, 2009 (12:54) | dayton, ohio, television, video, youtube | By: jrittenhouse

With a whimper: engineer shuts down WCPO’s analog TV transmitter (Cincinnati, Ohio) Same with other Cincinnati stations: WXIX (film of the analog signal actually going out), WLWT (nice little historical signoff piece),  and also Dayton’s WHIO.

An odd murder and burial:

29 May, 2009 (11:04) | criminals, dayton, deaths, delusions, ohio, weird | By: jrittenhouse

From my old home town of Dayton, Ohio: A Dayton Daily News supervisor accused of killing his wife and entombing her on the newspaper’s top floor managed to baffle detectives over her disappearance for five months until a tip led to the concrete grave, police said. “They won’t leave me alone,” Theodore Sinks is said [...]

This part of a piece that Garrison Keillor wrote about his brother’s death really caught me: He always knew what you were doing and he kept his critical opinions to himself. He called me once to ask how I was doing and I knew without his saying so that he knew about some nonsense I [...]

We’re glad you like what we have to offer; now we’re cutting it:

15 May, 2009 (15:37) | NYC, automobiles, business, dayton, journalism, newspapers, ohio, recession2008 | By: jrittenhouse

The Dayton, Ohio area authority in charge of public transport is having a banner year in ridership terms; my old hometown is being pounded with the collapse of Big Auto, principally GM.  However, sales tax revenues funding the authority have dried up, and they are cutting service and raising fares…but they’re making sure that the [...]

So much for that:

The tax refunds came back in, and back out again; Susan’s SUV needs immediate work on brakes and tierods (chaching), Mere and her cousin need to be signed up for some Summer stuff Right Now (chaching) and I’m getting the document scanner that I need, which is on sale at Egghead with free shipping (chaching).
