Close election:
In the Illinois 14th Congressional District, the former Speaker of the House, Denny Hastur …er, Hastert… decided to resign and give perennial wannabe elected official Jim Oberweis a shot at the seat. So the setup was that there would be a special election for the remainder of the term on March 8th, and a main election on November 4th for the next two-year term.
While I like Oberweis’s ice cream and milk plenty, I don’t care for his politics at all. This isn’t my district, it’s the next one over to the West, and we see all the ads for this race all the time.
The primaries on both elections were held Tuesday. The much-better-financed and more establishment candidate for the Democrats won the vote for the special election in March, but the vote for the general election candidate was too close to call between the establishment guy and John Laesch, a more progressive hellraiser. Around 75,000 votes were cast, and the margin is less than 350 votes.
