Reading Material:
Folks who are looking at this on the Memnison site will notice that I’m including a listing on my current reading stuff; partially, this is to discipline myself on staying on track with what I’m doing.
The vast majority of what I read for pleasure is history, historical fiction, alternate history, science fiction and science. There’s a stack of stuff waiting for me, as there always is, and I’m adding stuff all the time. Right now, I’m pondering re-reading The Half-Blood Prince and/or Order of the Phoenix before the final HP book shows up here.
By the way, I got a message from Amazon that I wouldn’t be getting that book on release day unless I switched from their free shipping stuff to regular shipping. Pissandmoan, of course, and I know who’s got first dibs on the book (and it’s not me).
My role as a judge for the Sidewise Awards keeps me busy, of course, with AH reading, but a terrible lot of those are – well, not up to snuff. The Great Law, Sturgeon’s, is all powerful in such matters.
I just finished the endpiece of the Turtledove series on the South winning the Civil War. I think this was number 11; in any case, logorrhoea mixed with too light a hand with editing means that most of Harry’s series stuff goes on endlessly with way too many point-of-view characters, far too much extraneous details, and “he ran and he ran and he ran” gets damn tedious to read. (Spoiler inside.)
Spoiler: The South loses this time and people get nuked. Bad guys get their just deserts.
